Spirit Halloween 2026: Store Opening Dates, Costumes and Shopping Guide

What Is Spirit Halloween?

Spirit Halloween is the largest Halloween retailer in North America, operating over 1,550 seasonal stores across the United States and Canada. The company was founded in 1983 in San Francisco and has grown into a seasonal institution, with many fans counting down the days until the iconic orange banners return to their local communities.

Each year, Spirit Halloween sets up shop in vacant storefronts and strip mall spaces, transforming them into temporary Halloween superstores. These locations carry a massive selection of costumes, decorations, makeup, props, and animatronics that are difficult to find anywhere else. For many shoppers, visiting Spirit Halloween has become an annual tradition that marks the beginning of the Halloween season.

Beyond its retail operations, Spirit Halloween operates the Spirit of Children charity, which has raised more than $164 million for children's hospitals across the U.S. and Canada since 2006. The retailer also has a robust online presence through SpiritHalloween.com, allowing customers to shop anytime, anywhere.

When Did Spirit Halloween Open in 2026?

Spirit Halloween opened more than 1,550 stores for the 2026 season, with locations beginning to open in mid-to-late August and continuing through early September. The official 2026 season announcement confirmed that stores are now open and welcoming customers.

Opening dates vary by location. Some stores open earlier than others, depending on when leases are finalized and spaces become available. In the Cincinnati area, for example, stores in Colerain, Springdale, Mason, and Middletown were open by late August, while locations in Florence, Blue Ash, and Newport were still listed as "coming soon."

The 2026 theme is "Camp Harbor Lake," inspired by campfire tales and 1980s horror movies. Spirit Halloween CEO Steven Silverstein described the season as a chance to welcome fans back to the brand's iconic experience.

How to Check Local Store Hours

Spirit Halloween store hours vary by location. In general, stores typically open at 9 or 10 a.m. and close at 9 or 10 p.m., though hours can differ depending on the day of the week and the specific store. Some locations have extended hours on weekends and closer to Halloween.

To check the hours for a specific store, visit the official Spirit Halloween store locator and search for your location. Each store page displays current hours, address, and status. You can also call the store directly for the most up-to-date information.

How to Find a Nearby Location

Finding a Spirit Halloween store near you is simple through the official store locator on the Spirit Halloween website. The locator allows you to search by city, state, or zip code and displays a list of nearby locations with distances, addresses, and current status.

The store locator is updated regularly throughout the season as new locations open and others close. If a store near you is not yet open, check back periodically or use the locator to see if a nearby location is already operating. Many shoppers also use the locator to plan trips to multiple Spirit Halloween stores in their area, as each location may carry slightly different inventory.

Masks, Props and Animatronics

Spirit Halloween is particularly famous for its animatronics, which are large, interactive figures that move and make sounds. These have become a signature product for the retailer and a major draw for shoppers.

New animatronics for 2026 include:

• Pumpkin Punisher: 7 feet, 1 inch tall
• Trash Bandit: 3 feet, 7 inches tall
• Wind-Up Wally: 4 feet, 10 inches tall
• Carnival Creeper: 3 feet, 9 inches tall

Other animatronics available in 2026 include Ghost Face from the Scream movies, a life-sized Willow Witch, a 4-foot giant fly named Buzz, and the Trash Bandit, a bloodthirsty raccoon in a trash can. These animatronics range from tabletop-sized to life-sized figures that can serve as the centerpiece of a haunted house or Halloween display.

Decorations and Makeup

The makeup selection at Spirit Halloween is extensive, with professional-quality products for creating everything from subtle looks to full horror transformations. The store also carries makeup kits, applicators, and special effects products like fake blood and scar wax.

How to Find Spirit Halloween Deals and Coupons

Spirit Halloween offers several ways to save on costumes, decorations, and animatronics. Here are the main options for finding deals during the 2026 season.

20% Off Coupon (TAKE20): Spirit Halloween offered a 20% discount in-store and online through mid-October 2026. The promo code TAKE20 could be used online, or the coupon could be presented at any location. The coupon was not valid with other offers or on prior purchases, and some exclusions applied to specific animatronics including the Jumping Spider, Sitting Scarecrow, Scary Sitting Scarecrow, Cerberus, Gourdo, Art the Clown, and Freddy Fazbear.

10-for-10 Coupon: Spirit Halloween's "10-for-10" coupon takes 10% off your entire purchase and Spirit donates a matching 10% to a children's hospital in your area. This is part of the annual Spirit of Children charity effort. The coupon is available through partner children's hospitals and can be used in-store or online with the promo code printed on the coupon (such as HOPE26 or GIVING26). It is valid through October 31, 2026, with some animatronic exclusions.

Free Shipping Code (DELIVER40): Spirit Halloween offered free standard shipping on orders over $40, or $5 shipping on orders under $40, using the code DELIVER40 at checkout on SpiritHalloween.com. The code was valid for orders shipped to the continental United States with Standard shipping only.

Other Savings Tips: Check third-party coupon sites like Offers.com for additional promo codes. Spirit Halloween also runs seasonal sales throughout October as Halloween approaches, with discounts increasing closer to the holiday. Signing up for Spirit Halloween emails can also provide access to exclusive offers.

Online Shopping vs. In-Store Shopping

Spirit Halloween offers both online and in-store shopping experiences, each with its own advantages. Understanding the differences can help you decide which option is best for your needs.

Buy Online Pickup In Store: Spirit Halloween offers a Buy Online Pickup In Store option at select locations. When adding a product to your cart, choose "pick up in store" and search by city, state, or zip code to find a participating store. You will receive an email when your order is ready, and you must bring a photo ID and your order number to pick it up.

Which is better? If you want to try on costumes before buying or need items immediately, in-store shopping is the better choice. If you want access to the full catalog, prefer to shop from home, or are looking for specific items that may not be stocked locally, online shopping is more convenient. Many shoppers combine both methods, using the website to research products and then visiting a store to make final selections.

What to Know Before Visiting a Spirit Halloween Store

Before heading to a Spirit Halloween store, keep these practical tips in mind to make the most of your visit.

1. Check Store Hours: Hours vary by location and day of the week. Use the official store locator or call ahead to confirm hours before you go.
2. Shop Early for Best Selection: Popular costumes, animatronics, and decorations sell out quickly. Visiting earlier in the season gives you the widest selection.
3. Bring a Coupon: If you have a Spirit Halloween coupon or promo code, bring it with you or have it ready on your phone. The 20% off coupon and 10-for-10 coupon can save you money on your purchase.
4. Know the Return Policy: Spirit Halloween accepts returns within 30 days of receiving your item. Items must be unworn, with original accessories, in new and resalable condition, and in original packaging. Intimate products, wigs, body jewelry, custom products, and clearance merchandise are not eligible for return.
5. Try On Costumes: Costume sizing can vary by brand and style. If you are buying a costume in-store, try it on to ensure a proper fit. If shopping online, check the size chart carefully.
6. Plan for Parking: Spirit Halloween stores are often located in strip malls and shopping centers. Parking is usually available, but it can get busy on weekends and closer to Halloween.
7. Bring a Friend: Shopping for Halloween costumes and decorations is more fun with a friend or family member. They can help you choose items and carry purchases.
